The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
