Time is optimal to switch Man Utd's formation - Amorim declares.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was among seven senior stars absent from the Boxing Day triumph against Newcastle.

Boss Ruben Amorim contends that switching Manchester United's formation due to public pressure would have meant "his demise" for him.

In a first against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his customary three-at-the-back formation with wide defenders and chose to use an standard four-man defense shielded by two defensive midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately became a back six in the closing phase as his team held on for a crucial result - securing only their second clean sheet of the season.

While he once memorably remarked that not even the highest authority could force him to change his approach, Amorim asserts the capacity to experiment with varied setups has consistently been part of his plan.

However, he clarifies he could solely alter the tactics when his team were faring sufficiently well - otherwise it would appear as if he was giving in to external pressure.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I recognized maybe I lacked the personnel to excel in that formation, but it was the start of a process," he commented.

"The goal was to forge an style. Now is a distinct moment. We are missing a full complement of players, and we need adjust, so they understand why we are making changes.

"This isn't because of the pressure of the media, or the supporters.

"Whenever the press talk about changing the formation repeatedly, I can't change because the squad will think I'm changing because of external voices and I think that is a disaster for the coach.

"Once we are playing well in our preferred setup, that becomes the moment to evolve.

"We will become a more complete side because when all the personnel are back, we are not planning to use a back three all the time."

Injury Issues Loom Large

Having just two wins in their last eight outings prior to defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is correct to claim his team have been in good form.

He is, however, managing with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior players already confirmed absent for the upcoming home game against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That total will rise if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to recover the knock that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is among those who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly urging his manager to allow him to make a comeback following his hamstring problem.

"Fernandes is already telling me he has to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to feature against Wolves. Definitely not. That's definitive."

The Captain's Influence Remains

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be a prominent presence, as whereas most injured stars view matches from a private box, Fernandes was spotted monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his captain to continue offering input.

"He is a natural leader," he declared. "He must not be the type of player that when he is not playing, he's not talking and offering advice. He's always vocal. That's why he's the captain.

"There are flaws at times - the way he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he heads to observe the other guys training. There are a lot of things that go unnoticed.

"I'm not sure if he wants my position or not, but he's a leader. He is a true captain."

Return Schedule for Key Personnel

While the exact timeline for Fernandes' comeback - and that of fellow injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, before the conclusion of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
